Beechworth's Lake Sambell is now home to a unique attraction: a floating sauna, and it's causing a stir! With 80 bookings already, this Scandinavian-inspired venture is a hit. But is it a community-building initiative or a controversial party pontoon?
Michael Patterson, a local businessman, is the visionary behind this project. He explains that bringing this idea to life wasn't easy, but he persevered through the challenges. The sauna, which opened on October 17, is accessible via a bridge constructed by Andrew Cairns, Mr. Patterson's business partner.
But here's where it gets interesting: some locals initially feared it would become a party hotspot, with concerns about alcohol consumption. Mr. Patterson assures that the focus is on wellness, not grog. He promotes 'contrast therapy,' an ancient practice of alternating hot and cold temperatures to boost circulation.
The sauna accommodates up to six people, with five being the ideal number. It's a social experience, but the emphasis is on relaxation and health. The sauna's opening was celebrated by Tourism North East CEO Bess Nolan-Cook and Bernard Gaffney, a former Indigo Shire deputy mayor and advocate for the project.
Mr. Gaffney believes the sauna has strong community backing and will benefit the entire shire. But is this floating sauna a community unifier or a potential source of division? What do you think? Is it a brilliant addition to the town or a recipe for controversy? Share your thoughts below!
